Single mode fibre (SMF) has a much smaller core size of 8.3µm or 9µm and a single light path that can travel long distances. It uses a laser diode which operates in the 1310 and 1550nm range. Single mode is typically used for longer spans, such as campus data networks, cable TV transmission and telecommunications networks.
